Description:

Lanthanum (III) Oxide (La₂O₃) is a white, odorless, hygroscopic powder that is one of the most stable oxides of lanthanum. It is an insoluble, alkaline compound with high thermal stability.

  • CAS No.: [1312-81-8]
  • Molecular Weight: 325.81 g/mol
  • Density: 6.51 g/cm³
  • Melting Point: ~2,315°C (4,199°F)
  • Boiling Point: ~4,200°C (7,592°F) (sublimes)
  • Solubility: Reacts with water to form lanthanum hydroxide; soluble in acids.

Key Properties:

  • High Refractive Index – Used in optical glass and coatings.
  • Alkaline Nature – Reacts with acids and absorbs CO₂ from air.
  • Thermal Stability – Maintains structure at very high temperatures.
  • Electrical Properties – Used in ceramic capacitors and solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs).

Applications:

Optical & Glass Manufacturing

  • Key component in specialty glasses, including camera lenses, fiber optics, and low-dispersion optical glass.
  • Improves refractive index and alkali resistance in glass.

 Electronics & Ceramics

  • Dielectric material in multilayer ceramic capacitors (MLCCs).
  • Used in lanthanum-doped barium titanate (BaTiO₃) for high-performance electronics.
  • Solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) – Enhances ionic conductivity in electrolytes.

 Catalysts & Chemical Processes

  • Catalyst support in petroleum refining (e.g., fluid catalytic cracking, FCC).
  • Used in hydrogenation, dehydrogenation, and oxidative coupling reactions.
  • Scrubbing agent for phosphates in water treatment.

Phosphors & Lighting

  • Acts as a host material for phosphors in LEDs, fluorescent lamps, and X-ray intensifying screens.
  • Example: La₂O₃:Eu³⁺ (red phosphor) used in displays.

 Nuclear & High-Temperature Applications

  • Used in thermal barrier coatings for jet engines.
  • Potential use in nuclear reactors due to neutron absorption properties.

 Biomedical & Research Uses

  • Investigated for antibacterial coatings and bone implant materials.
  • Used in lanthanum-based contrast agents (research stage).
