Description:

Praseodymium (III, IV) Oxide (Pr₆O₁₁) is a black-brown or dark green crystalline powder, representing a mixed-valence oxide of praseodymium (Pr³⁺ and Pr⁴⁺). It is the most stable praseodymium oxide under ambient conditions.

  • CAS No.: 12037-29-5
  • Molecular Weight: 1021.44 g/mol
  • Density: 6.50 g/cm³
  • Melting Point: ~2,200°C (3,992°F)
  • Solubility: Insoluble in water; soluble in strong acids.

Key Properties:

  • Mixed oxidation states (Pr³⁺/Pr⁴⁺) – Enhances catalytic activity
  • High thermal stability – Suitable for high-temperature applications
  •  Semiconductor behavior – Used in electronic materials
  • Strong UV absorption – Useful in glass and coatings

Applications:

Glass & Ceramics Industry

  • Yellow-green colorant for glass, ceramics, and enamel (produces bright, stable colors).
  • Used in UV-blocking sunglasses and protective goggles.
  • Improves refractive index and durability in optical glass.

Catalysts & Chemical Processes

  • Oxidation catalyst in automotive exhaust systems (replaces platinum in some applications).
  • Used in methane combustion, water-gas shift reactions, and NOx reduction.
  • Enhances fuel cell and hydrogen production technologies.

Electronics & Energy Storage

  • Solid electrolyte material in fuel cells and oxygen sensors.
  • Used in dielectric ceramics for capacitors.
  • Research applications in battery electrodes (Li-ion) and supercapacitors.

Polishing & Abrasives

  • Key component in chemical-mechanical planarization (CMP) slurries for semiconductor wafer polishing.
  • Used in precision optics and LCD glass polishing.

Nuclear & Radiation Shielding

  • Potential use in neutron-absorbing materials for nuclear reactors.
  • Studied for radiation-resistant coatings.

Pigments & Coatings

  • Praseodymium-doped zircon (Pr-ZrSiO₄) – A high-stability yellow pigment for paints and ceramics.
  • Used in artistic glazes and high-temperature coatings.
