Zirconia Toughened Alumina (ZTA) is a high-performance composite ceramic that combines the hardness of alumina with the toughness of zirconia. By integrating 10–20% zirconia into the alumina matrix, ZTA offers significantly improved flexural strength, fracture toughness, hardness, and wear resistance—typically 20–30% stronger than alumina alone.

This enhanced performance is achieved through transformation toughening, a mechanism in which zirconia particles transform under stress, creating compressive forces that help stop crack propagation. ZTA provides a cost-effective alternative to pure zirconia materials (YTZP, MSZ, CSZ), offering higher mechanical performance than standard alumina with a lower price point than zirconia.
